Film workshop with Candela Sotos
Filmes como marismas
Wetlands are transition zones between land and water. They don’t belong entirely to either of these two worlds: they are an intermediate space where currents slow down and the materials they carry can be transformed. This movement of water is a space of transformation where sediments, chemical compounds and traces of what happens in the landscape are collected. Then they are deposited, mixed, broken down and reorganised.
Something similar happens with memory. Past events reach this intermediate territory between history and the present. Like the water entering the wetland, past events bring sediments with them: stories, documents, silences, conflicting versions. Memory does not forget; it retains and processes them as best it can. Sometimes it retains them subliminally and recounts them through explicit communication or silence.
The workshop aims to delve into the stories, archives and narratives through the inherent paths of research, reflection, doubt and reorientation. We will take as our starting point a specific space that reinterprets and reframes the geographical, historical and natural context of Pontevedra: Marismas de Alba, a coastal marsh whose biodiversity stimulates the students’ creativity —the evolution and transformations of the projects from the initial idea to their audiovisual realization— and encourages experimentation with the temporal and historical layers inherent to this unique place.
In this context, ten students developed individual short-film projects that took shape throughout the various stages of this film workshop.
